Science and Integrated Language Plus Computational Thinking and Modeling with English Learners (SAIL+CTM)

Organization(s): New York University (NYU)
Funding agency: National Science Foundation
Program: STEM + Computing (STEM+C) Part
HRI Role: Evaluation

Project Description
Science And Integrated Language Plus Computational Thinking and Modeling with English Learners SAIL+CTM) was a collaborative project to build on the work of two ongoing efforts: Science and Integrated Language (SAIL) and StarLogo Nova. The project team comprised researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, New York University, and Vanderbilt UniversitySAIL+CTM expanded and refined the existing SAIL curriculum to integrate computational models using StarLogo Nova. Alongside this development effort the SAIL+CTM project team leveraged collective expertise across the partnering institutions to investigate: (1) the feasibility of implementing the curriculum in typical classrooms, and (2) the extent to which the curriculum promotes student learning outcomes in both science and computational thinking (CT).

Evaluation Services
HRI’s evaluation services include giving feedback on and documenting success of: (1) the functioning of the project’s partnership; (2) curriculum revision and design processes and products, with a focus on the integration of computational models within the existing SAIL curriculum; and (3) research design, instrumentation, analysis, and interpretation of results for various studies.
