Twenty individuals completed a master’s degree program that prepared them to work as elementary mathematics specialists and served in that role full-time for two years as part of the recent NSF-funded project, Researching the Expansion of the K–5 Mathematics Specialist Program into Rural School Systems, led by Virginia Commonwealth University (Horizon Research, Inc. [HRI] served as external evaluator on the project). HRI is studying how some of those individuals, who have now returned to the classroom, are being used by their schools and districts. HRI is examining the ways in which these individuals are continuing to serve as mathematics leaders, both formally and informally.
